Auspicious Practice is a film essay installation about a Korean-American woman, “her,” who has been diagnosed with Alopecia, a stress-induced autoimmune disease that results in patchy hair loss. Questioning the root cause of her Alopecia, the film draws connections between her diagnosis and the side effects of living in a fast-paced, image-driven society. Her hair loss is the visible indicator of a burnout state, a social disease.
As she finds herself increasingly unable to fit into existing beauty standards, she gravitates inwards to seek holistic healing. The film follows her process of self discovery, deeper understanding of her Korean roots, and engagement with her body meridian map through East Asian healing practices. She finds that strong roots breed an identity that nothing else can shake, enabling her to shed societal beauty standards and discover the power to heal her ailments from within. As she places herself back into the world by way of the point, she is now soft but firm.
Film essay installation was exhibited in Seoul, from August 19-28, 2020, with support from Seoul Arts Foundation.
조짐, 그녀에게 난처한 일이 생겼다 (Auspicious Practice) 는 스트레스성 자가 면역 질환으로 인해 탈모를 겪고 있는 ‘그녀’에 대한 이야기이다. 셀 수 없는 원형 탈모가 만든 그녀의 머리위 무늬의 주 원인을 쉼없이 빠른 속도로 돌아가며 겉으로 보이는 이미지가 중심이 된 우리 현 사회에서 연결고리를 찾는다.
그녀의 모습은 사회가 개인에게 준 스트레스 병의 이미지로 비춰지는 동시, 사회에서 정한 여자의 아름다운 (예쁜) 모습의 기준에서 그녀를 점점 멀어지게 한다. 탈모를 단기간에 치료하고 그 모습을 가리기 위한 방법을 찾는 데에서 시작된 그녀의 치유활동은 점점 근본적인 원인을 묻고 전체론적인 치유의 방법을 찾는 것으로 이어진다. 선입견을 버리고 여러가지 관점에서 시도한 그녀의 치유활동의 여정은 자신의 외적모습과 더불어 내면에 존재하는 자아의 모습을 바라보게 한다. 그녀는 자신의 가족, 그녀가 속한 사회와 문화, 자연 생태계에 안에 살아가는 자신의 위치와 자신의 뿌리를 찾아가며, 자신의 진정한 정체성에 대해 질문한다.
그녀는 사회와 개인이 서로 주고받는 영향에 대해 이해하며, 자신의 병을 치유하는 힘이 자신의 내면에 있다는 것을 발견하고 다시 사회로 돌아와 균형잡힌 자신만의 위치에 다시 선다. 이제 그녀의 뿌리는 깊다. 그리고 이제 그녀는 유연하고 강하다.
